Great Beginnings and First Time Performances for Women's Track & Field

The Principia College track and field teams opened the indoor season at home with a two day meet on Friday and Saturday January 25-26. Starting things off on Friday for the women were Laura Cluthe and Marygrace Kinuthia in the 60 meter dash. Both competed in their first college track meet, and Laura also competed in the 200 on Friday. On Saturday, Abby Holt began her college career in the high jump by clearing 1.54 meters (5' ½") to tie for sixth place. If you check official results you will see that fourth through tenth place all cleared the same height. Tie breakers are used to determine places when that happens. Number of misses at previous heights are used to decide ties.

Junior Elsa Heath ran distance races the last two years, but entered the 500 meter dash for the first time and ran 1:42. In the mile run, Emme Schaefer began her college track career with a sixth place finish in 6:07. Also having strong performances in their first college track races were Paige DeBoer and Katie Wood in the mile run. Marie Sherman has run outdoor track, but this was her first time competing indoors and she too opened the season well in the mile.

A big thank you goes to the baseball team for all of the volunteer hours they gave to help run this meet. There were many other volunteers from our Principia community along with Marquette High School Track and Field team. We cannot run track meets without a lot of volunteers at the announcers and the clerk's table, helping out at the field events, assisting the timers, and cleaning up. Thank you all!
