NAPERVILLE, IL – Two Principia Track & Field athletes,
Corey Carter and
Howard James, competed the Carius-Gregory Invitational at North Central College on Thursday as they attempted to lower their season-best performances in order to try and qualify for Nationals.
Carter began the day racing in the 400 meters and went toe-to-toe with Fontbonne freshman, Bryson Pickard, who bested him at the SLIAC Championships. Carter passed Pickard in the final 50 meters to shatter his previous best of 48.07 by over half a second with a blistering fast, 47.39. This puts Carter with the 19th best time in Division III for the 400m this season and sets the new Principia and SLIAC record in the event. Pickard finished in 47.52 for the second best time in SLIAC history.
Carter's second race of the day came in the 200 meters, and while he race a solid time of 21.33, this did not lower his season best (21.12) as he now sits 18th in the DIII rankings. The top 22 in each event will qualify for Nationals with one week left before the selections are finalized.
James competed in the long jump and jumped a season-best of 6.94 meters. This is not quite long enough to qualify for Nationals, but nice to see improvement at the end of the season.
