EUREKA, IL – With its season on the line, the Principia men's soccer team delivered a comeback to remember. The Panthers erased a 1-0 deficit with two goals in the final 15 minutes against Eureka College on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Red Devils 2-1 in what amounted to a win-or-go-home showdown for the final spot in the SLIAC Tournament.
After three straight one-goal losses, Principia came into their final regular season match with only one pathway left to extend their season: they must beat Eureka. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Red Devils landed the first blow in the 32nd minute, sending Principia into halftime trailing 1-0. The Panthers had seven shots in the opening half, including an Alejandro Liborio attempt that struck the woodwork, but couldn't find the equalizer before the break.
As the second half wore on, the Panthers' season crept closer and closer to its end. Principia continued searching for a breakthrough, but the 1-0 deficit remained with 15 minutes to play. Then, in the 76th minute, an unlikely hero came through at exactly the right time. Senior captain and defender Oscar Carpio got forward and after receiving a pass from Liborio, sent a perfect ball past a diving keeper to pull Principia level at 1-1. It was the first collegiate goal of Carpio's career, and it couldn't have arrived at a bigger moment.
Suddenly, Principia carried all the momentum. The Panthers kept coming, and just 6:46 after Carpio's equalizer, Alberto Hernandez came up with the moment that sent the Panthers into the postseason. A pass from Eziuche Ejimadu found the freshman striker, who buried the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.
Hernandez's game-winner was his conference-leading eighth goal of the season, but there was still work to do. Eureka pushed desperately for the goal that would save its own season, forcing Edgar Cartagena into a save in the 80th minute and another with just 18 seconds remaining. Cartagena finished with six saves as Principia held on through the final whistle to clinch the final spot in the SLIAC Tournament.
The Panthers will play on the road in the conference quarterfinals on Saturday, October 31, with its opponent still to be determined following Wednesday's remaining conference matches.
