Lucas Black

Lucas Black hails from England and is a World Rugby Level 1 Certified Coach and Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach. He began his rugby journey at Crawley RFC, where he progressed through the club's age-grade system before earning representative honors with Sussex County Rugby. His development pathway continued with selection into the Harlequins Developing Player Programme (DDP), one of England’s leading elite player development systems.

In 2018, Black moved to the United States to pursue both his academic and athletic ambitions. He initially attended Lindenwood University-Belleville, where he was part of the squad that won the D1-AA National 7s Championship during his freshman year. Following this success, he transferred to Lindenwood University, competing at a high level and earning selection to the Collegiate Shield.

His playing career then took him to Texas, where he joined Rugby HTX within the Houston SaberCats system, further developing within a professional high-performance environment.

Transitioning into coaching, Black served as an Assistant Coach at St. Louis University High in 2023, helping guide the program to a state championship. That same summer, he founded the Saint Louis Rugby Academy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization also known as The Jets, focused on growing grassroots rugby and providing year-round development opportunities for athletes across the St. Louis region.

Following the launch of the academy, Black joined the coaching staff at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy as an Assistant Coach. In his first full season, he helped guide the program to qualification for the CRAA National 7s Championship, contributing significantly to player development, recruitment, and performance programming.

Black currently serves as both the Assistant Rugby Coach and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Principia College. In these roles, he supports rugby operations while overseeing athletic performance programming across multiple sports. His background in strength and conditioning underpins his coaching philosophy, emphasizing long-term athlete development, injury prevention, and performance optimization.

Since founding the Saint Louis Rugby Academy, Black has helped build one of the fastest-growing youth rugby programs in the Midwest, creating structured pathways for players to progress into collegiate, national, and international opportunities.

Black earned his degree in Exercise Science from Lindenwood University. A family-oriented individual, he lives in the St. Louis area with his wife, Sydney, and their two dogs, Daisy and Delsie. Outside of rugby, he is a passionate soccer supporter and enjoys playing recreationally when time permits.
